Blepharitis usually involves the part of the eyelid where the eyelashes grow and affects both eyelids.<\/p>\n<p>Blepharitis commonly occurs when tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes become clogged. This leads to irritated and red eyes. Several diseases and conditions can cause blepharitis.<\/p>\n<p>Blepharitis is often a chronic condition that is difficult to treat. Blepharitis can be uncomfortable and may be unsightly. But it usually doesn&#8217;t cause permanent damage to your eyesight, and it&#8217;s not contagious.<\/p>\n<h2>CAUSES<\/h2>\n<p>The exact cause of blepharitis isn&#8217;t clear. It may be associated with one or more factors, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Seborrheic dermatitis &mdash; dandruff of the scalp and eyebrows<\/li>\n<li>A bacterial infection<\/li>\n<li>Clogged or malfunctioning oil glands in your eyelids<\/li>\n<li>Rosacea &mdash; a skin condition characterized by facial redness<\/li>\n<li>Allergies, including allergic reactions to eye medications, contact lens solutions or eye makeup<\/li>\n<li>Eyelash mites or lice<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n<h2>SYMPTOMS<\/h2>\n<p>Blepharitis symptoms and signs include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Watery eyes<\/li>\n<li>Red eyes<\/li>\n<li>A gritty, burning or stinging sensation in the eyes<\/li>\n<li>Eyelids that appear greasy<\/li>\n<li>Itchy eyelids<\/li>\n<li>Red, swollen eyelids<\/li>\n<li>Flaking of the skin around the eyes<\/li>\n<li>Crusted eyelashes upon awakening<\/li>\n<li>Eyelid sticking<\/li>\n<li>More frequent blinking<\/li>\n<li>Sensitivity to light<\/li>\n<li>Eyelashes that grow abnormally (misdirected eyelashes)<\/li>\n<li>Loss of eyelashes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>When to see a doctor<\/h3>\n<p>If you have blepharitis symptoms and signs that don&#8217;t seem to be improving despite good hygiene &mdash; regular cleaning and care of the affected area &mdash; make an appointment with your doctor.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<br \/>\n&#13;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEFINITION Blepharitis (blef-uh-RYE-tis) is inflammation of the eyelids.
