Males of any age can get epididymitis.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Epididymitis is most often caused by a bacterial infection, including sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as gonorrhea or chlamydia. Sometimes, a testicle also may become inflamed &mdash; a condition called epididymo-orchitis.<\/p>\n<h2>CAUSES<\/h2>\n<p>Causes of epididymitis include:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><strong>STIs.<\/strong> Gonorrhea and chlamydia are the most common causes of epididymitis in young, sexually active men.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Other infections.<\/strong> For boys and men who aren&#8217;t sexually active, epididymitis can be caused by a nonsexually transmitted bacterial infection. In boys and men with urinary tract or prostate infections, bacteria might spread from the infected site to the epididymis.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Amiodarone (Pacerone).<\/strong> This heart medication can cause inflammation of the epididymis.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Urine in the epididymis (chemical epididymitis).<\/strong> This condition occurs when urine flows backward into the epididymis, possibly because of heavy lifting or straining.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Trauma.<\/strong> A groin injury can cause epididymitis.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><strong>Tuberculosis.<\/strong> Rarely, epididymitis can be caused by tuberculosis infection.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<h2>SYMPTOMS<\/h2>\n<p>Signs and symptoms of epididymitis might include:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>A swollen, red or warm scrotum<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Testicle pain and tenderness, usually on one side<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Painful urination or an urgent or frequent need to urinate<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Discharge from the penis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Painful intercourse or ejaculation<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>A lump on the testicle<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Enlarged lymph nodes in the groin<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Pain or discomfort in the lower abdomen or pelvic area<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blood in the semen<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Less commonly, fever<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>Chronic epididymitis<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Epididymitis that lasts longer than six weeks or that recurs is considered chronic. Symptoms of chronic epididymitis might come on gradually. Sometimes the cause of chronic epididymitis is not identified.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<h3>When to see a doctor<\/h3>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Never ignore scrotal pain or swelling. Scrotal pain can be caused by a number of conditions, and some of them require immediate treatment to avoid permanent damage.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If scrotal pain is severe, seek emergency treatment.
