When your kidneys lose their filtering ability, dangerous levels of wastes may accumulate and your blood&#8217;s chemical makeup may get out of balance.<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div >&nbsp;<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div >Acute kidney failure &mdash; also called acute renal failure or acute kidney injury &mdash; develops rapidly over a few hours or a few days. Acute kidney failure is most common in people who are already hospitalized, particularly in critically ill people who need intensive care.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<div >Acute kidney failure can be fatal and requires intensive treatment. However, acute kidney failure may be reversible. If you&#8217;re otherwise in good health, you may recover normal kidney function.<\/div>\n<h2>CAUSES<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Acute kidney failure can occur when: <\/strong><br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You have a condition that slows blood flow to your kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You experience direct damage to your kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your kidneys&#8217; urine drainage tubes (ureters) become blocked and wastes can&#8217;t leave your body through your urine<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Impaired blood flow to the kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Diseases and conditions that may slow blood flow to the kidneys and lead to kidney failure include:<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blood or fluid loss<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blood pressure medications<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Heart attack<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Heart disease<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Infection<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Liver failure<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Use of aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin IB, others), naproxen (Aleve, others), or related drugs<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Severe burns<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Severe dehydration<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Damage to the kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>These diseases, conditions and agents may damage the kidneys and lead to acute kidney failure:<\/strong> <br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blood clots in the veins and arteries in and around the kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Cholesterol deposits that block blood flow in the kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Glomerulonephritis (gloe-mer-u-loe-nuh-FRY-tis), inflammation of the tiny filters in the kidneys (glomeruli)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Hemolytic uremic syndrome, a condition that results from premature destruction of red blood cells<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Infection<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Lupus, an immune system disorder causing glomerulonephritis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Medications, such as certain chemotherapy drugs, antibiotics, dyes used during imaging tests and zoledronic acid (Reclast, Zometa), used to treat osteoporosis and high blood calcium levels (hypercalcemia)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Multiple myeloma, a cancer of the plasma cells<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Scleroderma, a group of rare diseases affecting the skin and connective tissues<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), a rare blood disorder<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Toxins, such as alcohol, heavy metals and cocaine<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Vasculitis, an inflammation of blood vessels<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Urine blockage in the kidneys<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Diseases and conditions that block the passage of urine out of the body (urinary obstructions) and can lead to acute kidney failure include:<\/strong> <br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Bladder cancer<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blood clots in the urinary tract<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Cervical cancer<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Colon cancer<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Enlarged prostate<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Kidney stones<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Nerve damage involving the nerves that control the bladder<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Prostate cancer<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<h2>SYMPTOMS<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Signs and symptoms of acute kidney failure may include: <\/strong><br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Decreased urine output, although occasionally urine output remains normal<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Fluid retention, causing swelling in your legs, ankles or feet<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Drowsiness<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Shortness of breath<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Fatigue<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Confusion<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Nausea<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Seizures or coma in severe cases<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Chest pain or pressure<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Sometimes acute kidney failure causes no signs or symptoms and is detected through lab tests done for another reason.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>When to see a doctor<\/strong> <br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Make an appointment with your doctor if you have any signs or symptoms of acute kidney failure.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEFINITION Acute kidney failure occurs when your kidneys suddenly become unable to filter waste products from your blood.
