An irritant stimulates nerves there to send a cough impulse to your brain. The brain signals the muscles of your abdomen and chest wall to give a strong push of air to your lungs to try to expel the irritant.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>An occasional cough is normal and healthy. A cough that persists for several weeks or one that brings up discolored or bloody mucus may indicate an underlying condition that requires medical attention. A cough rarely requires emergency care.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>A coughing attack can be very forceful &mdash; the velocity of air from a vigorous cough through the nearly closed vocal cords can approach 500 miles per hour. Prolonged, vigorous coughing is exhausting and can cause sleeplessness, headaches, urinary incontinence, and even broken ribs.<\/p>\n<h2>CAUSES<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Common causes &mdash; chronic&nbsp;<\/strong>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Allergies<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Asthma (most common in children)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Bronchitis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>GERD &mdash; Gastroesophageal reflux disease<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Postnasal drip<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\nAn occasional cough is normal. But a cough that persists may signal an underlying problem. A cough is considered &#8220;acute&#8221; if it lasts less than three weeks; it&#8217;s &#8220;chronic&#8221; if it lasts longer than eight weeks (four weeks in children). <br \/>Some causes of coughs include: <\/p>\n<p><strong>Common causes &mdash; acute<\/strong>&nbsp;&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Common cold<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Influenza (flu)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Inhaling an irritant<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Pneumonia<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Whooping cough<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Others<\/strong> <br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Acute sinusitis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Bronchiectasis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Bronchiolitis (especially in young children)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Choking: First aid (especially in children)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Chronic sinusitis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>COPD<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Croup (especially in young children)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Cystic fibrosis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Emphysema<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Hay fever<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Heart failure (congestive)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Laryngitis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Lung cancer<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Medications called angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitors<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Neuromuscular diseases such as parkinsonism, which weaken the coordination of upper airway and swallowing muscles<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) (especially in young children)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Tuberculosis<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<h2>WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR<\/h2>\n<p>Call your doctor if your cough doesn&#8217;t go away after several weeks or if you or your child is:&nbsp;&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Coughing up thick, greenish-yellow phlegm<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Wheezing<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Experiencing a fever more than 100 F (38 C)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Experiencing shortness of breath<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Seek emergency care<\/strong> <br \/>Seek emergency care if you or your child is: <br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Choking<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Having difficulty breathing or swallowing<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Coughing up bloody or pink-tinged phlegm<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n<strong>Self-care measures<\/strong> <br \/>To ease your cough, try these tips: <br \/>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li><\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Suck cough drops or hard candies. They may ease a dry cough and soothe an irritated throat. Don&#8217;t give them to a child under age 3, however, because they can cause choking.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Moisturize the air. Use a vaporizer or take a hot, steamy shower.<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Drink fluids. Liquid helps thin the mucus in your throat.
