Eye pain that&#8217;s on the surface of your eye might be described as itching, burning or shooting pain. Surface eye pain is often related to a foreign object in your eye, an eye infection, or anything that irritates or inflames the membrane covering the surface of your eye.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>You might describe eye pain originating deeper within your eye as throbbing or aching. This type of eye pain may be linked to a serious medical condition.<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>Severe eye pain &mdash; especially accompanied by any degree of vision loss &mdash; may be a signal that you need medical attention urgently.<\/p>\n<h2>CAUSES<\/h2>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Allergies<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blepharitis (inflammation that affects your eyelids)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Blocked tear duct<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Chalazion (a type of cyst on your eyelid)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Contact lens problem<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Corneal abrasion (rubbing off of the very top layers of the cornea, the transparent cover of your eye)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Dry eyes<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Ectropion (condition in which your eyelid turns out)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Entropion (condition in which your eyelid turns in)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Foreign object in eye<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Glaucoma (group of conditions, often the result of pressure inside your eye, causing nerve damage)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Cluster headache<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Injury, such as from a blunt trauma or burn<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Iritis (inflammation of the colored part of the eye)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Optic neuritis (inflammation of the optic nerve)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Pink eye (conjunctivitis) (inflammation or infection of the transparent membrane that lines your eyelid and covers the white part of your eyeball)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Scleritis (inflammation of the sclera, the tough white outer part of your eyeball)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Sty (a red, painful lump near the edge of your eyelid)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Uveitis (inflammation of the middle layer of the eye)<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<h2>WHEN TO SEE A DOCTOR<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Call 911 or for emergency medical assistance<br \/> <\/strong>Seek immediate medical attention if:<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<ul>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your eye pain is unusually severe<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your vision changes suddenly or you have difficulty seeing clearly<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your eye is too painful to touch<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You experience abdominal pain or vomiting along with your eye pain<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your eye pain is caused by a foreign object or chemical splashed in your eye<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You see halos around lights<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>Your eye bulges outward<\/li>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<li>You have trouble moving your eye<\/li>\n<p>&#13;\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#13;<\/p>\n<p>If you have eye pain and you wear soft contact lenses, have a weakened immune system or your eye pain is worse after using medication for three days, you should also seek medical attention.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>DEFINITION Eye pain can occur on the surface of your eye or within your eye&#8217;s deeper structures.
